Disclaimer: I own neither the Doctor Who nor the Torchwood Characters. No profit was or ever will be made.
A.N: I found this idea on the net and thought I’d try it out. The idea was to pick a character/pairing/fandom and using your music on shuffle write a short fic based off of the song. You had only untill the end of the song to complete it. I tried to focus on only one of the fandoms but when I did it, it refused to let me. These include both Doctor Who and Torchwood.
1. What you Own, RENT (Anytime after Countrycide)
Ianto Jones looked around the Hub and sighed. He didn’t know how four people could manage to get one area so dirty in less than 12 hours. Picking up a trash bag Ianto began collecting the take out containers, candy bar wrapers and other assorted things littering his co-workers desks, and the floor around it.
If Ianto was honest there was a time when he didn’t mind the mess they made. It gave him something to focus on. He could take his thoughts away from Canary Warf, away from Lisa if only for a little while. He would have to admit that he dove into his work.
That was until he let Captain Jack Harkness under his skin and realized that maybe he wasn’t as a lone as he thought.
2. Keep the Candle Burning, Point of Grace (After the Last of the Time Lords)
The Doctor looked around the Tardis unaware that Martha Jones has a keen eye on him. She watched as he checked the living machine over to ensure that the paradox machine the Master had created hadn’t left any permanent damage when time had shifted back.
Martha smiled to herself, with everything that had happened she’d never lost faith that the Doctor would somehow set it right. Sure she’d thought him absolutely loony at times but she’d never been able to completely banish him from her thoughts as the way out.
Walking around the continents, Martha had to focus on keeping that faith alive. She knew that the Doctor’s words would keep her going. She’d just had to hope the world they got back would be better and still turning.
3. One Voice, Billy Gilman(During The Doctor’s Daughter)
The Doctor looked at the people surrounding the young woman that had just come out of the machine. He watched as she was handed a gun, watched as she demonstrated that the use of weaponry and brute force was already hardwired into her.
When he’d realized that she had two hearts his own gave a staccato stutter. He wouldn’t be alone; she was another Time Lord; if only by genetics. The Doctor thought that if he could show her that there was a choice instead of using guns he could feel better calling her that – calling her daughter.
When Jenny had come running saying that she hadn’t used her gun to kill but seen the other ways he was taking about he was proud. One voice was heard after all.
4. The Ballad of Serenity, Firefly theme song(During The Last of the Time Lords)
Jack closed his eyes and thought about flying. He thought about the ships he’d flown, the places he’d seen and flying in the Tardis. He thought about the happy, calm he always got when flying. Whatever the Master did he couldn’t take that away.
5. Rafiki Mourns, The Lion King OBC (Pre Last of the Time Lords)
The Tardis was living; almost every companion that came aboard knew that. The Doctor had taken great care to inform them. What no one seemed to notice was that the Tardis felt heavy with emotion but had no one to share with. The Doctor had long ago forgotten how to communicate with her.
When the Master began fiddling with her she cried with her own pain and the pain of those around her. She could feel companions of the Doctor’s being killed; could feel Jack Harkness being tortured over and over and wanted nothing more than to help.
When she couldn’t the Tardis flared brightly before becoming a dim glow. Mourning for those she could feel, the possibilities she felt dying.
6. Lean On Me, Marvin Gaye (Post-Exit Wounds)
Ianto starred into space as he walked; trying not to see the destruction around him. He knew, eventually he would have to look but at this moment he needed to get out; needed to leave the suddenly oppressive atmosphere of the hub. Breaking into a run Ianto didn’t stop until he was out of breath and leaning heavily against a rail blocking entry to the water.
Caught in his grief Ianto never noticed Jack come up behind him.
Jack watched the young man before him sadly. Someone so young shouldn’t have to face so much loss. Canary Warf, Lisa, losing two teammates and friends was too much for someone Ianto’s age. Jack wondered how Ianto coped.
Wrapping his arms around Ianto Jack let him curl into him and cry. Rubbing soothing circles on Ianto’s back Jack thought of all the times Ianto had let him talk. He’d deal with his own grief later. Right now he wanted to be someone Ianto could lean on.
7. Are You a Ghost?, B*Witched (Post-End of Days)
Ianto sat up with a start. Looking around his bedroom for what had awoken him. Part of him hoped that it had been Jack coming back, but it’d been months since Jack had disappeared and he’d all but given up hope on him returning.
Shaking off the creepy feeling Ianto was about to go back to sleep when he noticed something in the corner of his room. A soft glow appeared and he could just make out the outline of a young woman.
“I’m not going to hurt you,” a woman’s voice said.
Ianto gave an incredulous laugh, “That’s what they all say.” His thoughts turned to Jack, who had died and came back only to leave again. To the kiss that announced to the hub that they had something going on.
The woman’s form became more clear, “He’s coming back you know? He’ll come back for you.” The gold lights surrounding her suddenly flared brightly and flowed toward him.
“Who are you?” he managed to get out.
As the gold lights surrounded him and he faded to darkness Ianto heard her reply, “Bad Wolf.”
8. Believe, Brooks and Dunn (AU set after Reset)
Ianto remembered what Jack and Owen had both told him. That after death there was nothing but darkness - an ever consuming darkness, with something unspeakable out to collect you.
The thing was Ianto couldn’t believe that. He knew he had no reason to doubt Jack and Owen; they’d both been dead. The problem was they weren’t anymore –well not in a rotting corpse, buried in the ground sense anyway.
Closing his eyes Ianto vaguely felt the tears sliding down his cheeks, and heard his friends voice thought he couldn’t make out what they were saying. Letting out a shaky breath Ianto hoped that for those who were meant to stay dead there was more to it then a hearse and never ending blackness.
He’d guessed he’s find out one way or another soon enough. With his teammates watching Ianto Jones stopped breathing.
9. Season’s of Love B, RENT (Post-Exit Wounds)
Jack held tightly onto Ianto, he knew that he could have lost him just as easily as they had lost Tosh and Owen. Looking at the two graves - he refused to let these two be stuck in the hub’s morgue, they deserved better then that - Jack thought about all the good and bad times they’d had over the years. There wasn’t an easy way to measure someone’s life.
His life had been brighter for knowing them; he’d only wished they had had a chance for a happier life.
10. I’ve Got a Theory, Buffy the Vampire Slayer (Post-End of Days)
Owen listened to Ianto talk about what he figured was going on, listened to him read out of the book. Ianto always seemed to have a theory about everything and a name for anything they showed him. It’s been months since Jack had taken off and to his surprise he and Ianto had slowly become friends.
The four left behind by Jack had bonded into a tighter knit family then before. They were all each other had and they had to work together.
With the rift they either won or they died but they would do it together.
